1976年加州酒的崛起到现在已经对波尔多的一级酒庄产生了不容忽视的影响。当年,一间英国的红酒公司在巴黎举行了一场盲品,他们用了勃良地与波尔多最好的酒庄与加州一些新的产酒区进行比拼。这场盲品比拼不单止令法国着名的酒评家一致偏向美国酒盲品也令美国的红酒与白酒胜出了这场比拼。这是一次令人难以忘怀的经验,而这次的结果更上了时代杂志的封面。

 

今日仍然会有一些人怀疑加州酒能否与波尔多一较高下。而我觉得问题只在于你的个人偏好而已。

 

当我们把着眼点落在一些经典的美国酒如Joseph Phelps, 蒙大维 (Robert Mondavi), Mayacamas,蒙特莱纳庄园 (Chateau Montelena),鹿跃庄园 (Stag’s Leap),海氏庄园 (Heitz), 和多明纳斯 (Dominus),我们都可以发现一些与波尔多一级庄的共同点:酒体都能表达出以赤霞珠之主的力量与深度,与食物相配之下的细腻与优雅的特色往往带给品酒之人一种乐而忘返的感觉。是次晚宴所挑选的美国酒就是出自于这个观点。再者,他们都是出自于我們的酒窖,现在已介乎20到40岁之龄,是时候表现出长期窖藏后的复杂性。

 

與此同時,我們也挑選了一眾已成熟了的波爾多五大酒莊。到底今晚我们会偏向哪一边? 这是一个有趣的问题。客人们今晚所决定的结果将会再次带起这两个产酒区的焦点。

The rise of California as a serious challenger to the Bordeaux First Growths only began to be taken seriously in 1976. In that year a British wine merchant organized a tasting in Paris where the best wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux were tasted blind in a competition with wines from the ‘new’ wine regions of California. Not only did the American wines do well in this competition judged by leading French experts (tasting blind), but both the top white and the top red were American wines. It was a big uspet, and this result made the cover of Time magazine.


Today few people doubt that California can make wine to compete with Bordeaux. The question these days is one of style preference.

When we look at the really great classic estates – Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi, Mayacamas, Chateau Montelena, Stag’s Leap, Heitz, and Dominus – we see very similar objectives to those of the first growths in Bordeaux: wines that show both the power and depth of Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, combined with the finesse and elegance desired in wines to accompany food and not tire the drinker. The examples we will show this evening fit that ideal. Futhermore, they were made with cellaring in mind, and now, at 20 to 40 years of age, they show the same long-cellared complexity as their Bordeaux counterparts.

Which will we prefer this evening? That is the fun question. Our guess is that the results will show why both regions are worth your attention.
