The most curious thing you notice arriving at Château Pape Clément, is that much like Haut-Brion, you are right in a Bordeaux suburb. Traffic lights, lorries, houses and apartments surround the vineyard. It’s testament to the value of this great Graves terroir that it has survived the property developer’s cheque book. It’s also a reminder of how much the city of Bordeaux has grown since this estate was established in the 13th century.

The wine is classic Graves, blending almost equal proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and offering an often smoky, sweetly herbal aroma, round texture, and generous fruit when mature. In the mid-20th century Pape Clément made some of the greatest wines in Bordeaux, including the 1947 we shall taste this evening. But it was really the last three decades of work delivered by Bernard Magrez and his team that have elevated this estate to its “super second” equivalent rank.

No need to write more here. Come and taste our assembled 14 vintages spanning 6 decades, and decide for yourself on the quality, longevity and style of this wine.
