When we think of the Mosel, the first three steps are easy to understand if you already understand Burgundy -

  • The wines are made from a single grape variety, not a blend
  • Wines are made from individual vineyards and carry the name of that vineyard
  • There are sometimes multiple owners of a given vineyard, so you see different producer’s version of that vineyard, and each producer makes wines from different vineyards.

So far so good.

The added twist is that these Riesling producers also tell you on the label the style of the wine produced. A “kabinett” is the lightest, aperitif style wine, a “spätlese” is a little richer, fruitier, but still a very fresh, zesty style to match with food. At the top of the scale you have “eiswein” (ice wine), and “beerenauslese” plus “trockenbeerenauslese” which are sumptuously nectar-like, essency wines to be sipped in contemplation.

Auslese? This is a broad category lying between two levels (spätlese and beerenauslese) and takes a bit more to understand. But it is at auslese level that we find some of the best, most compelling examples of German riesling today, so it is worth paying attention.

Today Linden will unravel auslese with ten top examples covering a range of concepts to get to grips with:

  • from fresh clean and zesty cool vintage, through to botrytis laden decadence. Let’s find the clues to knowing what to expect.
  • ‘House’ styles across six producers
  • Eight different vintages covered (including two ‘vintage pairs’ to see what cellaring contributes)
  • Auslese Goldkapsel, and other special qualifiers discussed.

Yes, some nerdiness is involved today, but as always, the approach will be fun, engaging, interactive, and what better way to spend a Saturday afternoon?

To keep the event intimate, places will be strictly limited so be quick if this sounds like something for you.
