Ah, Château Pavie. Not a wine to evoke a neutral response, it has in latter days been a touchstone for a wine style debate. There was Jancis Robinson’s note on the 2003 - 'Completely unappetising overripe aromas. Why? Porty sweet. Port is best from the Douro not St.Emilion. Ridiculous wine more reminiscent of a late-harvest Zinfandel than a red Bordeaux with its unappetising green notes...12/20’, which led to a public row with Robert Parker Jr., who had initially rated the wine (96-100). By 2014 Parker wrote of it 'At its release, the 2003 Pavie was somewhat controversial in wine tasting circles, but eleven years later it is obviously a great classic.’, and gave it 99/100 (and who has award 4 perfect scores – 2010, 2009, 2005, and 2000).

Pavie was undoubtedly transformed by buyer Geard Perse from the late 1990s, from a good (English taste) fairly classic St.-Emilion, into a wine market superstar in the 2000s. Press poured in enormous investment and passion into the venture. For all this Pavie received an upgrade in 2012 (along with Angelus) to Premier Grand Cru Classé A — a status previously only enjoyed by Cheval Blanc and Ausone.

This evening’s tasting will be fascinating I think for the opportunity to answer two key questions —

  1. How well have Mr. Perse’s Pavies aged? These are represented by the vintages 2006-1998, all now 10 to 18 years old. Mature enough to answer the question.
  2. What can we learn about the underlying terroir from these and from the older vintages, which cover most of the previous great vintages - ’90, ’89, ’83, ’82, ’61 and ’59?

I’m sure we’ll have a great discussion as we taste through these 14 vintages round the tasting table. And anyway, plenty of high class wine to enjoy on a Tuesday night!

Vintages will be served:

2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1990, 1989, 1983, 1982, 1961, 1959.
