Here's a chance to enjoy an eclectic range of fine rarities to with the cuisine, setting and service that have earned The Capital two Michelin stars. We begin with a pair of my favourite Rieslings – a poised and precise Scharzhofberger feine Auslese, from Egon Muller-Scharzhof (in this case from the classic 1966 vintage), alongside the more opulent but equally mineral 1989 Trimbach Vendange Tardive 'Clos St Hune'. Then two contrasting but aromatic mature reds – 1955 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (which was famously voted by Wine Spectator editors to be one of their top 12 wines of the 20th century), and 1934 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Reserva Especial. Interesting, don’t you think? Then three wines from my birthyear – 1972. Not a good year in many places I would concede – which is why this is particularly selective. First up, Jaboulet’s Hermitage ‘La Chapelle’ 1972, from a period when they were making their best wines and in a vintage that was moderately successful on the hill. Then to quite a different hill and syrah becomes shiraz – Hill of Grace 1972 from Henschke in South Australia. The core of the wine comes from pre-phylloxera ungrafted vines. I wrote to the Henschkes about this late-released bottle – "A classic year with near perfect weather conditions producing excellent reds". Well the sun had to be shining somewhere! Finally a 1972 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Comtes Georges de Vogue which Clive Coates gave 19/20 and wrote "Multi dimensional. 1972 is indeed the last great de Vogue vintage until recent times." A nice point at which to linger in Burgundy a little longer with another pair of classics – 1962 Clos de la Roche from Armand Rousseau and 1961 Richebourg from DRC. Nice! Finally, a real treasure – Château Chalon 1878, Domaine Voiteur (yes EIGHTEEN seventy eight). Now, where’s the cheese trolley? In addition to a place for myself and a guest, there will only be 8 tickets available to this event.
