A very fine treat for claret lovers this evening with a range of wines chosen not only for their quality and charm, but also for the chance to make comparisons pair by pair. It's a pulse-quickening selection to read through, and features many wines that have been favourites at our Classic Series events.
1990 Cristal Champagne - Aperitif
We lead off with two quite rich but elegant Pomerols from a year very successful in the district:
1952 Vieux Chateau Certan, chateau-bottled
1952 Chateau Cheval Blanc, Belgian-bottled
Then a first growth pair from what to my thinking is now the top vintage of the 20th century:
1959 Chateau Margaux, chateau-bottled
1959 Chateau Haut-Brion, chateau-bottled
Then two giants of wines, fine, but of near immortal proportions:
1945 Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases, chateau-bottled
1928 Chateau Latour, chateau-bottled
Then, from the peak of power, back to a sense of elegance again:
1953 Chateau Gruaud-Larose, Nicolas-bottled
1934 Chateau Margaux, chateau-bottled
Finally, the crescendo with a fine E7 and a legendary Yquem:
1947 Chateau Rieussec, chateau-bottled
1937 Chateau d'Yquem, chateau-bottled
The event will be kept intimate Elimited to 10 tickets plus a place for me and a guest.
