Join us in a share of a Hospices de Beaune barrel of 2017 Burgundy, which when bottled will have your name, your newborn's name, your company logo, or your favorite quote, etc, on the label.
About the 2017 vintage:
Finally, after years of frost and hail, 2017 is a normal yield year. Volumes are normal (though demand remains high, as reflected in the auction result). April frosts were averted, but it was a close run thing. Welcome rain came in May. June was hot, and July mixed – bunches were plentiful but small (good for quality). August was dry and mainly fine. Harvest began early – from 1st September in the Côte de Beaune, the Corton white a week later with good sugar levels, but also correct acidity levels. The reds were picked from 2nd to 11th September, with both quantity and quality looking strong for 2017.
We taste 48 cuvées separately. Each of us makes a note of the wines we particularly like. Then, we discuss those as a group. Wines one of us doesn’t like are eliminated, and we are left with a shortlist, which we re-taste. We also discuss those wines with Jasper Morris MW, and our senior consultant Anthony Hanson MW, who tastes with us.
Then, of course, there is the aucton itself. Some of our selections get eliminated due to prices being too strong in relation to the relative quality.
In the end we feel we have the best wines possible at the best prices possible.
One further element we pay close attention to is ‘élevage’. This process is the tending of the barrels of just-made wine by a Burgundy domaine from its barrel ageing all the way through to and including bottling. It’s important work and has an influence on the final quality of the wine. Not all élevage is equal. We only go for the absolute best élevage available, and we choose domaines that understand each cuvée well. In addition, we select an éleveur who will bring ‘value add’ to the wine. Their names also appear on the label. The 2017 Beaune 1er Cru, Cuvée Dames Hospitalières and Corton Blanc Grand Cru, Cuvée Docteur Peste are tended for us by Etienne de Montille; the 2017 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru, Cuvée Madeleine Collignon is tended for us by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair.
All of these steps combine to make our offer to you the very best possible Hospices de Beaune Burgundy offer possible — the right selections, flexibility of quantity (1/4 barrel shares), and the right people to tend and bottle the wines, all taken care of for you by the highly experienced team at The Fine Wine Experience.
