1er Cru Classé, Graves.
Upper shoulder bottle, label a little worn, but sound appearance. The (original) cork came out in tact and in good condition.
A very curious wine. Very deep ruby colour with some age at rim (would think 10 years old to look at); strange aroma – sweet, just a little oxidation but not much, but then this pruney sweetness; then on the palate, thick textured, with a flavour of prunes. Our group struggled for descriptors – old Madeira but with out the extra alcohol or sharp acidity; like an old Rutherglen Muscat for the raisin flavour – but without the rancio character or level of actual sweetness, and a touch of pedro ximenez – again without the same level of sweetness. The wine is sound and enjoyable in its way, but it is not claret-like at all.
Tasted at our Château Haut-Brion Vertical Tasting, 27th April 2004.
