1er Cru Classé, Graves
Very top shoulder bottle, label faded and worn away around the edges. The (original) cork came out cleanly and in tact.
A surprising depth of colour – quite tawny at the rim, but with a depth of ruby at the core; really sweet and fragrant aroma, richness – which continued to open up in the glass for some time; lovely rich sweetness on the palate – sound – very fine, but actually still tannic. Long finish. No ‘frailty’ here at all. Clearly the star of the show – all but me voted it top wine of the tasting. I put the 1990 ahead – just, but this was the most memorable. Superb wine – and without making any allowances for age.
Tasted at our Château Haut-Brion Vertical Tasting, 27th April 2004.
