Bricky colour – still healthy; sweet leather, charcouterie, iodine on the nose (a friend later noted ‘baked cherry pie’ which I go on his suggestion – certainly sweetness); sweet fruit on the palate, moderate concentration. This is fairly straightforward to taste, yet balanced and delicious, with reasonable length – like a 34-year-old version of the 1997 perhaps. This is now past its best but still very good. - Linden Wilkie
Mature brick with slight amber at the edge. Explosive nose of ripe complex roasted fruit, baked pie crust and iodine. Fantastic pure red fruit with good delineation; expansive, balanced and long. Obviously a ripe vintage and excellent winemaking. Fully mature and drinking best of tonight’s lot. - Charles Darnell
Tasted at our Jaboulet Hermitage ‘La Chapelle’ Vertical Tasting, 30th March 2004.
