Good colour for its age – some ruby at the core, mature rim; lovely nose – complex, leather, sweetness, mineral, “gibier” – really quite wonderful to sit and smell this wine; rich, sound, complex, gentle and resolved on the palate. Very harmonious. After 45 minutes in the glass it began to fade and crack up a little, but the first 45 minutes were so good. Truly classic (and a nice complement to the superb Château Léoville-Las-Cases 1955 we had last year).
Tasted at The Fine Wine Experience vertical tasting of Château Montrose, Tuesday 28th September 2004.
