5th Growth, Pauillac.
A ruby core, and fairly developed rim. Sweet meaty nose – game, and Cabernet-predominant fruit – leafy, plus layers of cedar and pencil shaving – classic Pauillac. Taut, ripe fruit, plenty of fine tannin, and some bottle age complexity. It’s difficult to tell which way this wine is going. Some thought it needed more time to resolve its tannins, while others thought it’s fruit would drop too much before this would happen. I would be inclined to drink this wine now – it’s showing good complexity and fruit, and I think it is likely to hold rather than improve. Drink now-2006.
Tasted at our '1985 Bordeaux Cru Classé' tasting, 21 October 2003.
