Good colour – dense cherry black-red velvet with a healthy rim, glass-staining; lovely aromas – roast forest berries, mineral – iron and iodine, floral and fresh at the same time; palate supremely elegant and fine textured with lovely fruit, fine and with a very long finish with notes of chocolate. Great suppleness and refinement. Nothing out of place and very detailed. This wine gives shivers of pleasure and a wry smile of contentment! So balanced and refined it is enjoyable now, but this should be immortal. Stylistically less ‘flashy’ than the 2000, and for me that gives this wine the edge.
Christian Moueix commented that this is “one of my favourite babies”. He added that it had a “thickness of colour”, freshness and delicacy on the nose – not heavy, it is pure refinement and the fruit was picked at perfect maturity, with no over-maturity. He personally prefers the 1998 to the 2000 as it has more elegance, while the 2000 has more power.
