Deep ruby, unfiltered appearance, with a bricky rim; spicy aromas, wonderful dark berry fruit plus chocolate, star anise and other sweet spices, plus tea leaves – quite exotic; palate thick-textured, rich, concentrated tea, dark chocolate and berries, followed by a very long finish. This has the power of the ’95 but more fruit and is the most decadent of the Pétrus line up. This seems to balance power, structure and fineness with sheer decadence. A joy.
At our tasting the vote was 60/40 in favour of the 1990 when asked which between the 1989 and 1990 was preferred. Christian Moueix prefers the 1989, as do I. For me it typifies the decadence of great Pomerol, while retaining refinement and structure. I would apply M. Moueix’s comment about the 2000 – “a controlled explosion” – to this wine.
