Bricky colour, still with depth but quite mature; complex, fully evolved aromas, open – ripe fruit and sous bois; rich silky texture, tertiary flavours, firm acidity with tea and spice details on the complex finish – drying out a little now, but long complex finish. This is quite a pleasure to drink, and relative to the value placed on other vintages, an under-valued Chateau Pétrus.
Christian Moueix commented that the 1978 was the result of one of the latest harvest dates in the history of the property – a vintage saved at the last moment. For him, the wine has a “Burgundy character”.
Clive Coates MW, who moderated the tasting, added that the if the 1982 was the ‘Montrachet’, then the ‘1978’ was the ‘Chablis’.
