1er Cru Classé, Margaux
75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc
Deep ruby – a more youthful colour than many 1985s; sweet, opulent nose – floral, violets, mineral – just wonderful, and with a touch of ginger spice not found on the others; ripe, succulent, so harmonious, opulent flesh in the mid-palate, round, with a soft finish. Great finesse and restraint too. A lovely wine – my only criticism being that it lacks the concentration of other vintages, and was a touch less stellar than when tasted in magnum in October 2003. Still, a very beautiful Château Margaux, and who is to complain?!
Tasted at our Château Margaux Vertical tasting, Tuesday 27th July 2004.
(Tasted from magnum): Still deep and youthful in appearance, but with a little development on the rim; amazingly floral, sweet and exotic on the nose - just lovely to smell this; palate bright, sweet, full-bodied and very fragrant / floral. Delicate, yet concentrated. Just lovely. Beautiful now and with a long life ahead. 97/100
Tasted at our '1985 Bordeaux Cru Classé' tasting 21 October 2003.
