In contrast to the 1996, this is already providing some immediate appeal and although I think the 1996 will surpass it in time, this would be my choice between the two over the next 3~5 years’ drinking.
Opaque core, slightly more colour development than the ’96 – deep ruby with some bricking on the rim; sweaty, leathery aromas, sweet floral notes, cedar, blackcurrants and dried herbs and sweet spices – enticing grand vin nose; lovely balance on the palate – ripe, succulent fruit, ripe soft acidity, long smooth-textured wine, very curranty-cabernet fruit flavour, long and delicious. Got sweeter and even more approachable with airing. A good future but already enjoyable.
Tasted at Michael Broadbent’s Christie’s Masterclass, 23rd March 2004 (94/100)
----------
Semi-opaque ruby core with a fair degree of development on the rim for a ’95; fragrant cedary fruit, piquant; classic ripe fruit on entry, but then a touch of leanness. Not a fleshy Montrose, and perhaps a touch advanced for its age, but nonetheless fine. (90/100).
Tasted at The Fine Wine Experience vertical tasting of Château Montrose, Tuesday 28th September 2004.
