I have not tasted this wine. Published critics’ ratings:
‘I look back on some pretty appalling notes made throughout the 1980s. Indeed I cannot recall one wine, let alone Latour, being so rudely referred to: smelling of ‘old socks’, ‘sweaty fat’ (at a subsequent tasting), ‘animal fat, pork and boot polish’, ‘very cheesy, bandages’ – whether mint, lint or over sores not elaborated upon – ‘dung’. ‘Happily a better flavour than nose’, which is at least something. Most recently, a much kinder note at a pre-sale tasting in London: (now) medium-deep, still youthful, nose very rich though very tannic, opening up quite agreeably ; dry, good flavour, on the lean side and with tannic finish. On the whole I am not too keen and doubt if it will ever rise above the character of a dour Scotsman. Last tasted Jan 1999 **’ – Michael Broadbent MW, Vintage Wine, 3rd Edn.
‘This wine has been difficult to evaluate, as evidenced by multiple tasting notes that varied greatly in terms of the wine’s style and quality. In most examples, the 1979 Latour has been backward and astringent, with medium body and reasonably good fruit. Two examples have been quite rich, with noticeable acidity, medium body, and the classic Latour mineral, walnut, and back fruit character. As I have said before, this wine is a light-bodied version of the outstanding 1971 Latour. Anticipated maturity: Now-2005. Last tasted 1/ 97.’ 88?/100 – Robert Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Edn.
‘Pretty and still lively, this medium-bodied wine is focused and balanced, with spicy and woodsy accents to its black cherry flavors. Drink now through 2005.--Latour vertical. (TM)’ 89/100, Wine Spectator, 15th December 1997.
Come and decide for yourself at our Chateau Latour ‘One Century’ Vertical tasting, Tuesday 14th December 2004.
