1er Cru Classé, Pauillac
Upper shoulder. Recorked by Whitwams in 1980.
Possibly just a curiosity, but how many opportunities are there to try a 19th century first growth? Worldwide this vintage of Ch Latour trades for between £1600 and £3,500 a bottle.
On the minus side, this wine has been re-corked.
On the plus side, the level of this bottle is upper shoulder, and the recorking was done by Whitwams. It is also reputedly from a good cellar.
In his second edition of Vintage Wine Michael Broadbent MW reports on 1896: ‘An abundant crop of delicate and distinguished wines, but only those in perfect condition have survived.’ He rated the vintage four stars out of five. On the Chateau Latour he wrote: ‘Two notes. One bottle delicate but dried out in 1971. The other, mid-shoulder, too brown and drab though a surprisingly good old nose and flavour. Dry. Rather acidic.’ He last tasted it in 1981 and has removed the entry in his third edition published in 2002.
Come and decide for yourself at our Chateau Latour ‘One Century’ Vertical tasting, Tuesday 14th December 2004.
