1er Cru Classé, Pessac-Léognan
Healthy ruby core, some development on the rim; sweet herbs, bacon, cedar, tar on the nose – rich and opulent; lovely sweet soft entry, plump fruit with mineral complexity and a very long sweet-flavoured finish with a tobacco note. This has great extract and complexity, yet has real elegance too. Superb.
Technically my wine of the night (though the quality of the 1945 at 59 years of age is more memorable), and the #2 ranked wine amongst our taster on the night.
Tasted at our Château Haut-Brion Vertical Tasting, 27th April 2004.
