Deep semi-opaque ruby; intense earthy nose, ripe (someone mentioned camembert – and that seemed right too!) – complex and brooding aromas; ripe on the palate, very full-bodied, fruit flavours intermixed with wet leaves, tar, dried roses and other hard-to-describe flavours that add up to a sort of earthy, rich amalgam. The amazing thing here is the texture – long and broad, palate coating, with a sense of richness, though the wine gives a sense that there is much more to come as it is still very firm and tannic – a bit austere right now.
Tasted at our de Vogüé Musigny and Bonnes Mares Vertical tasting, 25th May 2004.
