1er Cru Classé, Barsac
(Harvest in Sauternes began in intense heat on 15 Sep. Hottest 20thC vintage). Brilliant lemon gold – markedly lighter than the ’49; corked on the nose, though still with some richness coming through; this wine tastes corked – but less so than on the aroma, and is a frustration to taste – for everything else seems to be in place: the wine is rich, has good acidity, a weight in the palate – enough, in other words, to tell that this is a great wine, ruined 57 years ago when the cork was put into this bottle of greatness! (Especially when one considers the wine had good provenance, appearance and a level into the neck!)
Tasted at our Château Climens Vertical Tasting, 22nd June 2004.
