Negocient-bottled by Cruse, Bordeaux.
Very deep colour (I allowed myself a smile of hope as I decanted this venerable wine, when I saw its deep ruby robe), ruby with an amber rim – similar to the 1970s line up(!); savoury-sweet aromas, with notes of earth, dried herbs and road tar – clearly from a big, ripe vintage; lovely sweet entry, quite rich and concentrated, earthy flavours, and then shows its age a little on the finish, which is still long. An extraordinary survivor, and will decline very slowly given its extract and tannin.
Tasted at The Fine Wine Experience Château Lafleur vertical, Tuesday 7th September 2004.
