1èr Cru Classé, Margaux
Deep ruby with a touch of development on the rim; initially fairly reticent on the nose, ripe, with ‘biscuity’ oak-derived sweetness, a touch of violets. With further prompting and with air, aromas of cherries, plum, smoke and minerals emerge – later quite fruity (this needs aeration decanting); thick-textured, concentrated and very fine on the palate. There is a wonderful tension on the palate between fruit, acidity and tannin, and a great purity in its expression. A wonderful wine, and for me, superior to the very great 1995.
Tasted at our Château Margaux Vertical tasting, Tuesday 27th July 2004.
