1èr Cru Classé, Margaux
Deep coloured – semi-opaque, with some development on the rim (would have to pick it as Margaux or Palmer to guess the vintage right – it is so youthful in appearance); ripe, sweet, mineral and cedar with a touch of volatile acidity giving it lift, though also a touch worrying for its future; creamy-sweet and opulent fruit, harmonious, long. Not super-complex, but very beautiful in expression. Bright acidity gives this lift. If not for the slightly worrying VA, plenty of time in hand.
Tasted at our Château Margaux Vertical tasting, Tuesday 27th July 2004.
Previous tasting note, London, 4th October 2003: Quite deeply coloured – an opaque core with just a touch of age on the rim; really sweet fruity nose; thick-textured, concentrated ripe fruit on the palate, very fine, sweet, with a firm tannic finish (not helped by my tasting sample having a little sediment in it). The most concentrated and least evolved of the 1983 first growths. 93/100
