1/8 wine in flight.
Pinguet explained that this was a late maturity vintage, with the true ‘freshness and acidity’ of chenin – a ‘vin de trie’ (selection wine) that will age well.
Me – bright light golden; sweet honeyed nose – like pure, fresh honey with a touch of green apple and honeysuckle sweetness; ripe, yet dry on the palate, very fresh-flavoured, honeyed, with ripeness, balanced acidity and a long finish returning crisp, honeyed varietal flavours. 92/100
Antony Hanson’s comments: unexpectedly deep colour for its age; floral and herby aroma (hay) – the character of chenin: agrreable and characterful; medium-bodied, linear with good length and finish and balanced acidity.
Footnote – it amazes me that the current vintage of this wine is available at Waitrose for just £12.99. Kudos to Waitrose, but it has to be one of the wine world’s fine wine bargains.
Tasted at Christie’s, London, Thursday 6th May 2004.
