4/8 wine in flight
In terms of my experience with these wines and what I took away from this evening, this was the wines that left me with so much (much as the 1967 had done in my recent Ch Haut Brion tasting). Firstly, this was not a ‘1ère Trie’ – just a straight moelleux – just 30g/l of residual sugar. Secondly, who has ever heard of 1935 as a sweet wine vintage anywhere in Europe? – it wasn’t, yet this wine was so fresh. Anthony Hanson MW put some of the freshness down to early bottling – just 6 months in old barrels prior to bottling in the spring.
My tasting note: Bright healthy mid-gold; lovely delicate aroma – honey, almond and tangerine – opened up a little to a flambéd orange note; sweetness on entry with a distinctly old-wine pasty texture, moderate concentration, fairly fresh but with a slight bitterness on the finish (which with further airing turned to a little oxidation signalling coarseness). The lovely citrus character follows through on the palate. This wine had lovely balance and delicacy. Who would know?!
Tasted at Christie’s, London, Thursday 6th May 2004.
