Pinguet – ‘the maximum expression of chenin – the perfection of chenin’
My tasting note: Like the 1990, very deep – orange bronze core, but with an extraordinary green rim (and I don’t mean a tint – this is light green on the rim); astonishing nose – soooo complex – tangerine, smoke, marzipan…; rich, complex, powerful yet balanced and with refreshing acidity and a long finish. There is that ‘pithy’ finish giving refreshing bitterness on the finish (think – quinine / ripe citrus pith) adding to the refreshing quality of the acidity. This wine is so compelling – balanced with nothing out of place; utterly stunning.
Tasted at Christie’s, London, Thursday 6th May 2004.
