2ème Cru Classé, St Julien
Deep garnet, but less youthful looking than the 1996; ripe with an almost tar-like licorice note, violets; intense, deeply-concentrated fruit, but with a surprisingly straightforward flavour given the chateau's reputation in this vintage. There is nice, moderate acidity, great ripeness and firm tannin on the finish, but it feels a little monolithic. Unready, and perhaps going through a bad phase(?)
