Jaboulet Hermitage 'La Chapelle' 1990

Region: -Rhone
Type: Red
Rating: Not rated
Guide Price: 225.00

Very deep unevolved colour, opaque at the core; deep tarry nose with pepper and depth of fruit – yet subdued, reticent – this needs some swirling of the glass to get anything; thick-textured and very concentrated on the palate. This is a massive, yet unyielding wine right now. It is very ripe in profile with almost liqueur-like fruit noticeable alcoholic heat on the finish. This is so closed up and tannic it is not much fun to drink. Wait another 10 years at least.

Too hard to judge right now – (94-96?)
- Linden Wilkie

Dark purple (almost black in center) w/ little to no development at the edge. Brilliant deep nose of T-bone steak and blue/black fruits. Fantastic ripeness but tastes more youthful than in Dec2003 (which seemed more developed); very tight tonight; ripe, balanced and expansive w/ good length; should have 20-30 more years of evolution. Not a 100 point wine in my book, but clearly a collectible wine in the upper 90’s.
- Charles Darnell

Tasted at our Jaboulet Hermitage ‘La Chapelle’ Vertical Tasting, 30th March 2004.

.........

Very very deep, opaque core with just a touch of maturity at the rim and thick, glass-staining legs; ripe, coffee, sweet spice, but not very open on the nose; super-concentrated palate, ripe with mouth-coating ripe extract laden with tannin, intense, rich with savoury notes and a thick, tannic finish. This is massive, yet seems to have balance, it is just not giving much joy to drink right now. Unready.

Rating (93-97).

Tasted blind in a line up of 5 Northern Rhône wines in our 1990 Rhône Valley Reds tasting, 2nd December 2003.
