1er Cru Classé, Graves
Clear ruby red with a brick rim; really sweet nose – tobacco! This vintage sings it loud and clear – very fragrant and open aromas with the sweetness of the ripe fruit and an earthy, iodine character adding complexity; soft, sweet fruit on entry and seamless softness on the finish which is long. Not “big” but elegant, soft, and long. This is fully mature now and on its plateau (more developed than the bottle opened in October 2003)
Tasted at our Château Haut-Brion Vertical Tasting, 27th April 2004.
Mid ruby colour, aged rim. Sweet, somewhat subdued (for Haut Brion) nose, almost honeyed sweetness, some herbs and minerals. On the attack, the fruit is sweet and elegant, followed by a wave of sweet, fine tannin, which led to an aftertaste of ripe fruit, tobacco, spice and mineral. A typically delicate wine, but perhaps not quite yet showing its full potential. Its balance suggests a very good future. Drink 2007-2015. (93/100).
Tasted at our '1985 Bordeaux Cru Classé' tasting, 21st October 2003.
