Alexandre Chartogne from Champagne Chartogne-Taillet will be in Hong Kong briefly in January 2026 to host this small-scale intimate dinner, for a real deep dive into his Champagne approach. We’re going to zero-in on two cuvées in particular, and try them over multiple vintages - paired with the great food at Table by Sandy Keung. The first cuvée is Hors Série Extra Brut, which is a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs from plots in Avize and Oger. While Alexandre is well-known for wines near to his village of Merfy, Hors Série marks an irresistible chance to go deep into the highly porous chalk of the Côte des Blancs, and from very old vines. We’ll get to try the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 of this cuvée, and for extra interest, we will compare two closures - cork and capsule - for the 2019, to discuss the impact of micro-oxygenation in his wines. The yang to this ying is a line of 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 Les Barres Extra Brut - giving us our ‘vintage pairs’ to the Chardonnay, this cuvée is an expression of 100% Pinot Meunier from 50 year old ungrafted vines from a single sand over chalk plot. The vins clairs are aged in 228 litre barrels, there is no topping up - to promote ‘mineralisation’ - and there is no dosage.
Needless to say, Alexandre Chartogne is one of the most fascinating of the young grower movement producers you could want to spend an evening with. This Champagne deep-dive in the private dining room of Table by Sandy Keung, with a menu a tailored to match, makes for a very special evening.
