FROM 1978 TO 2023: A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME COLLECTION OF CROS PARANTOUX

Every wine lover is quietly chasing their elusive 100-point bottle, the singular experience that defines a lifetime of tasting. A few years ago, I asked a wine geek friend if he had found his yet. He didn’t even hesitate. “Yes,” he replied, his eyes lighting up with the memory, “a bottle of 1978 Henri Jayer Cros Parantoux. The finish is still lingering in my mind.”

That answer resonated deeply, as Cros Parantoux is a vineyard that captures the imagination like few others. Nestled just above Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée, this tiny, high-altitude premier cru was once a forgotten patch of rocky scrubland before the legendary Henri Jayer painstakingly cleared it and planted vines in the mid-twentieth century. Today, it remains one of the most exclusive and mythical sites in all of Burgundy, shared only between Domaine Emmanuel Rouget and Méo-Camuzet, yet producing wines that routinely rival the greatest grand crus.

My own infatuation with this sacred plot was cemented during a mesmerising dinner we hosted back in 2017. The theme was Henri Jayer, and among the lineup, the 1990 Henri Jayer Cros Parantoux and 1993 Henri Jayer Cros Parantoux stood out as the undisputed stars of the evening. They possessed an almost heartbreaking ultra-purity, delivering waves of silky red fruit interwoven with exotic spice that completely captivated the table.

That signature purity is something I am always searching for, and I found it again during a company trip to Burgundy. Standing in the cellar of Emmanuel Rouget, tasting the 2018 Emmanuel Rouget Cros Parantoux directly from the barrel, I was spellbound. Out of the hundreds of wines I tasted on that trip, it was my absolute favourite. The nose was extraordinarily expressive, soaring from the glass with fresh berries, vibrant flowers, and deep spice. It mirrored the ethereal purity of Jayer’s own creations, showcasing magnificent concentration without carrying any excessive heat or heaviness from the warm vintage.

Yet, if I had to name my personal pinnacle for this vineyard to date, it would be a breathtaking bottle of 1985 Méo-Camuzet Cros Parantoux, enjoyed during a dinner celebrating the great 1985s. The bouquet was a complex, intensely floral masterpiece of mixed clean fruit, fresh herbs, mint, sweet date, and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, it delivered an astonishing display of balance, marrying delicate finesse with an underlying, resonant power. Alongside some spectacular 1985 Ponsots, it was simply the wine of the night - a perfect encapsulation of why this tiny, rock-strewn vineyard commands such profound reverence.

Given the microscopic size of this premier cru, acquiring even a single bottle is a remarkable feat. Yet, despite this extreme scarcity, we are deeply honoured to present an extraordinarily extensive collection of Cros Parantoux for your consideration. Our curated list spans from the legendary 1978 vintage all the way to the highly anticipated 2023 En Primeur releases. Whether you are marking a monumental milestone, searching for the ultimate gift for someone special, or simply looking to taste wine history, a bottle from this sacred plot will elevate the occasion into a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
