Corks do a lot of peculiar things as they age with your precious wine. In storage that is a little too dry they can become brittle, and a regular corkscrew will just drill a hole in the middle and leave you pulling out little cork bits and cork dust. A mess. On the other hand, a fully soaked old cork can come out like cake mix, and if you use an “ah-so” opener (superior to a waiter’s friend for such corks) you risk pushing that sort of cork into the bottle as you attempt to get the two prongs down the side.
So how is The Durand® different? Essentially it combines the benefits of a “waiter’s friend” corkscrew and an “ah-so” corkscrew into one device, and is almost invincible against all kinds of corks.
Not only will you be able to get difficult corks out in one piece (saving hassle), but you will also have a much better chance of being able to read the print on the cork – confirming wine identity and vintage (no more re-assembling little cork fragments like some forensics analyst!)
Basically, if you open any wine older than 10 years of age, you need The Durand®.
