This grower Champagne, Chartogne-Taillet, has a special place in my heart because it’s the first Champagne I ever poured by the glass when I began working as a sommelier (it’s at a good price point now and was back then too). That was back in 2007, so the label and wines have changed since then. I believe they are even better now. I’m still a fan and looking forward to sharing with you what makes this grower Champagne special.

In 2006 Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family winery after training with Anselme Selosse. Chartogne-Taillet is made up of just 12 hectares and is located in the village of Merfy in Montagne de Reims. By 2007, Alexandre had taken over the reins of running the winery. The first Champagne he made after returning was the 2006 ‘Les Barres’, a specialty for them made from 100% un-grafted Pinot Meunier vines. You will get to taste this first wine from Alexandre in our lineup.

What I like most about these Champagnes from Chartogne-Taillet is their focus and expression of terroir. It’s quite unique to find this emphasis as for so many years Champagne has been all about blending. Like his mentor, Anselme Selosse, Alexandre focuses on terroir in Champagne. If you are a fan of grower Champagne and are looking for a good one that’s affordable, I encourage you to come out and taste through this range from Chartogne-Taillet.
