The rise in Germany for dry Riesling has led, arguably, to its most successful fine wine type – Grosses Gewächs, or “Grand Crus”, referred to simply as “GG”s. Made by members of Germany’s club of top estates – the VDP – they are made from fully ripe healthy (no botrytis or shrivelling) Riesling grapes, unchaptalised, and only from the best – grand cru-grade – vineyards, as single-vineyard terroir expressions.

Today, over lunch, we get to grips with this topic, focusing on exceptional producers and vineyards, with comparisons in the glass that allow us to see clearly differences in vineyard, producer style and winemaking, and the impact of vintage.

All this, sympathetically matched to lunch at Bâtard. I look forward to seeing you there.
